GMHS School Climate Survey

March 29, 2019

Dear Parents and Guardians,

At the start of the 2018-2019 school year, Georgetown Middle/High School established the first Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) team consisting of faculty and staff members from both schools and from different departments. Our mission has been to learn and conduct research on the impact of social and emotional learning on a school’s culture and student learning. Through our journey, we have learned about the difference of having a fixed mindset compared to an open mindset, different styles of learning and the impact on the brain, meditation techniques to reduce stress, the power of establishing positive relationships, and many more topics on the impact of SEL.

On the March 15th faculty professional development day, the SEL team applied their new knowledge to creating a variety of workshops for the faculty and staff to attend. The teacher-led workshops were well received, and the work of implementing SEL strategies into the school culture took off.

The next step in our work consists of implementing SEL climate surveys for parents/guardians, students, and faculty members. Each of the individual surveys have been created to focus on the following areas:

  • Engagement (cultural and linguistic competence, relationships, school participation)
  • Safety (emotional safety, physical safety, bullying/cyber-bullying)
  • Environment (instructional environment, mental health, discipline, identifying questions)

Over the next couple of weeks, all participants will be taking the survey. Once completed, the SEL team will compare the results in order to gain a better understanding of the greater Georgetown community and the school’s culture strengths and shortcomings.

Please take a moment to complete the SEL Parent/Guardian survey and help contribute to the hard work of incorporating social and emotional learning at Georgetown Middle/High School. The survey can be accessed at and will be open until April 11th.

Thank you for your time and commitment.

Mr. Richards
