7th-Grade iPad Academy
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This year students entering the 7th grade and all new students to our school will be completing the GMHS iPad Academy during their respective student orientation day. The orientation date is Wednesday, August 21st. The iPad Academy will begin at 10:30am and last approximately one hour. Parents are encouraged to take part in the iPad Academy but are not required to do so. Students leasing iPads from the school will be receiving them during their Academy session. Students and parents will be required to sign for the iPad in order to bring it home with them that day. Parents may sign for the iPads at the end of the Academy if they will not be attending the actual session.
Students who are not leasing iPads from the school are responsible for bringing their iPads to the Academy. Students will be asked to download specific apps during the iPad Academy and should be prepared with their iTunes account active and sufficient funds to purchase apps (approximately $15). If you are bringing your own iPad and have paid the $27 technology fee you will receive a link via email to download the self-service app. The self-service app allows students to access the “GMHS app” store where they will be able to download the applicable apps needed for their courses and the Academy. Students who are opting out of the 1:1 initiative will receive a loaner iPad for that day.
Here is the agenda for the 2019-2020 iPad Academy:❏ iPad Distribution in individual sessions
❏ Student v. Guest network and Wifi permissions❏ Self Service App Store
❏ Apple Classroom
❏ Georgetown Public Schools Technology Acceptable Use Policy❏ Google Suite
❏ Digital Note-taking
We look forward to meeting everyone at the Academy! If you have any questions, please reach out to Liz Marchetti at email@example.com and firstname.lastname@example.org.

7th-Grade Reading List
Your child is asked to read a minimum of two books this summer: one required book (see below), and at least one other from the list on the next page.
Grade 7: The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
The middle school summer reading list offers many genres for students to choose from: nonfiction, fantasy, fiction, mystery, historical fiction, science fiction, humor, and the classics. If your child has a particular topic, author, or series that he or she enjoys, your child, with your consent, may also read a fiction or nonfiction book that is not on the list provided.
In September, all middle school students will be asked to write a grade-appropriate literary analysis essay. Understanding characterization in an extended text and using citation are essential skills for comprehension and literary analysis; therefore, we chose these skills on which to focus our students’ early writing. This essay for students in grades 7 and 8 will become the baseline of your child’s year-long writing portfolio.
Many online resources are also available. Audiobooks are especially helpful for students as a means of support while reading more challenging text. We recommend that students read along while listening to the audio format to ensure students’ reading fluency and comprehension.
Thank you in advance for your support; happy reading!
